There are some awkward lapses in the “Funny Girl” script, though Demers does his best to minimize them here. Costumes can add a lot to any production, and Lisa Cross does an excellent job of creating the period costumes of the 1920s and ’30s (a minor flaw is that some of WolfKlain’s Fanny outfits — in the years when she can well afford nice clothes — made her look frumpy). But for the “His Love Makes Me Beautiful” number, the ensemble’s wedding topper dresses are Ziegfeld Follies’ caliber.

The camp is the brainchild of Francesca Tenconi, founder of the Children’s Skin Disease Foundation. Born and raised in Walnut Creek, Tenconi at age 11 was diagnosed with a rare skin disease called pemphigus foliaceus, an autoimmune illness that causes her skin to blister and scale. For the competitive swimmer, the news was devastating. “Skin disease is so visual; you can’t hide from it,” Tenconi said. “I really had to learn pretty quickly what reality was, of what people would say or what people would think of me.”.
